　　Blood is re-oxygenatedin the lungs, where the oxygen enters the blood through tiny capillaries and combines with the hemoglobinin the red blood cells, before returning to the blood stream. Air is drawn into the lungs by inhalingand is the source of the oxygen that passes into the blood. As the air is exhaledfrom the lungs, it expels unwanted carbon dioxide which has replaced the oxygen. Contractions of the diaphragm, and of the muscles between the ribs, control the size and gross capacity of the chest.
